Before I got the Maytag Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator, I was not sure if I would like having the freezer compartment on the bottom. I have seen family and friends with this type of set up and it seems like every time they opened their freezer, it was a mess and their food would easily get buried. The MAJOR difference between those refrigerators and my Maytag Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator is that my freezer is not a pull out drawer – the hinged door swings fully open. Items don’t get lost or buried with this type of set up. I can easily view everything along the shelves and in the doors.
I really like all of the adjustable shelves in the top refrigerator compartment. It really helps to be able to configure the storage shelves and drawers the way I need them to be. The extra large capacity side shelves are big enough to fit milk gallons in them! My family goes through a lot of milk every week, so I like being able to store more than one gallon of milk in the side door.
The Spill Catcher shelves make sure that if something happens to leak out or spill over, it does not run all over the refrigerator. They are very easy to keep clean with a simple wipe down.
The refrigerator door opens fully so that you can easily see everything stocked on the shelves and in the doors. The holiday season is here, and right now, my refrigerator is packed with Thanksgiving leftovers like turkey, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Yum!
For a midsize refrigerator (19 cubic feet), this Maytag Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator can hold a fair amount of groceries…but, my large family of six needs something bigger. This refrigerator is quite a bit smaller than our old refrigerator, and does not hold the amount of groceries I normally buy from week to week. The freezer compartment fills up very quickly, and is not big enough to hold many of the bulk freezer items I usually like to buy at Costco.
Although the ice maker is a nice feature, I would rather have more freezer space with this particular model. The ice maker takes up about half of the top shelf in the freezer. I can live without ice, but it’s hard for me to live without a certain amount of freezer space.
I think smaller families could get by with this size of refrigerator, it’s just on the small side for our family by a few cubic feet. I have noticed that I have to be more organized to fit everything in just the right spot. Everything has its place and there is not much wiggle room for extras.
Overall, the Maytag Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator is a beautiful stainless steel addition to our kitchen. I definitely prefer the way the bottom freezer compartment opens up as opposed to a slide out drawer style freezer. Nothing gets lost in this freezer, that is for sure. I love the way the refrigerator door fully swings open so that we can instantly view everything inside. My favorite feature is that the door shelves are big enough to hold our milk. If I could make this refrigerator just a tad bit bigger, it would be better suited to our needs.

interesting. I’ve never seen a swing door on the bottom freezer. I’m curious, it seems like it would be hard to reach down there to find your freezer stuff, almost a pain. But is there a reaosn, like it stays cooler, to have the freezer on the bottom?

I’m not sure if there is a benefit to having the freezer on the bottom as far as keeping things cooler (that’s a good question, I should ask the experts!) But it is convenient to have the refrigerator on top since everything is up a little bit higher (instead of having to bend down into a refrigerator with a freezer on top). I hope this is making sense – it’s hard to write it out in words.
I do like the swing door better than the pull out drawer freezers, even though you do have to bend down to really reach into it.

I’ve always just been so interested in freezers on the bottom. I guess because they’re so much smaller, it seems like more of a pain to reach down into them, below, lol. I agree though, I’ve never gone for them, because there is no way I could find anything in a pull out drawer. It would just pile into a big mess.
