My family’s thoughts:

The Ultimate Collector’s Edition set is full of fun collectible items, including a “Golden Ticket” (I always wanted one of those as a kid!). The Pure Imagination: The Story of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory book that comes in the package is a nice documentation of the film’s production and its impact. Of course, the actual movie on Blu-Ray and DVD  is the true treasure. Simply put, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory is a must-own family film. It’s timeless, classic, and an all-time favorite movie.

Until recently, my family did not own this movie as part of our collection (insert horrified gasp) and when my 8-year-old saw the movie cover, his first words were, “That is not Willy Wonka!” – referring to the picture of Gene Wilder (insert second horrified gasp). My own child didn’t know that the real Willy Wonka is not Johnny Depp. Or I guess I should say the original Willy Wonka is not Johnny Depp.  I took the opportunity to explain the different versions of the film and just how iconic Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka is to people throughout the world.  To me, Gene Wilder IS Willy Wonka.

I’m pleased to report that my children have now viewed the classic version of this film and loved it.

Even though I have seen this movie countless times in my lifetime, it never gets old. I still know all the words to the songs and still enjoy singing along with the movie. And now my kids can sing along with me, too.  How can anyone not love the Oompa Loompas song?

If you haven’t introduced your family to the classic Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, the Ultimate Collector’s Edition will make the perfect addition to your movie collection.

VeggieTales Princess and the Pop Star (New Release DVD) #Giveaway

The latest VeggieTales, Princess and the Pop Star, will be released August 16!

VeggieTales
My family “discovered” VeggieTales earlier this year. I had heard of VeggieTales for years, but had never actually seen one of them. From the time we saw our first one, we were fans! These videos are so cute and a great way for children to learn good values.

My children enjoy watching the VeggieTales stories because they are fun, musical, and always have a little silly kid humor mixed throughout that makes them laugh. We had a great time watching VeggieTales Princess and the Pop Star and I liked that afterwards we talked about the lesson we learned about how everyone is special and unique, and how much God loves each one of us.

Visit YouTube and watch the official VeggieTales Princess and the Pop Star trailer.

Weekend Recap: We Saw Rango (Movie Review)

Photobucket We went to see Rango on Saturday, mainly to make my 3-year-old happy, since he has been asking to see Rango ever since seeing the quirky-looking chameleon on movie trailers. My husband and I both had the same initial thought: This isn’t really a movie that young children will enjoy. Let me just say, we were right.

The movie started out keeping the boys’ (ages 3 and 7) attention, but before it was even halfway over, they had lost interest. The humor (crude at times) was aimed at adults, and I didn’t like that there was even some mild swear words used as well as scenes showing animals smoking. My kids did not “get” most of the movie’s humor, nor did they understand the movie when it went off on sophisticated philosophical tangents. Not the type of movie I would recommend for children, at all.

Here is a very simplified rundown of the plot, I will try not to add any spoilers. A lonely pet lizard’s life is turned upside down when he falls out of the back of a vehicle and into the Mojave desert. He soon meets another lizard (a girl) named Beans, who takes him to the nearest town called “Dirt.” Dirt is a classic Western town with some problems: They are almost out of water and they have an enemy called Jake the Snake. Through a series of events, Rango is accepted as the town’s new sheriff and undergoes a heroic journey to save the town and solve the water problem.

Surprisingly, the main character, Rango, wasn’t even all that loveable. And many of the other characters are actually kind of ugly and scary-looking. Nothing that will attract my kids to want to own Rango-themed toys, that is for sure. (Thank goodness!) The best thing I can say about the movie is that the animation is excellent and you really do feel like you have visited the desert after you watch it.

My family stayed for the entire movie, even though I would have been glad to leave just because the kids were restless. It is safe to say we won’t even try to rent this when it comes out on DVD. It’s just not our type of movie.
