Eco-Friendly Friday: BuySoapNuts.com (Review)

by Nicole on March 18, 2011

I have been wanting to try Soap Nuts to wash my laundry for a while now, and finally got my chance. The nice people at BuySoapNuts.com sent me a bag to sample!

If you are wondering what “soap nuts” look like, here is a picture:

Recently, I wrote a blog post with some basic information about Soap Nuts, you can read it here for more information about where these certified organic nuts come from and how they contain saponin, a natural detergent.

As for my review, I will get right to the point: If you are looking for an effective way to GREEN your laundry routine, you must try Soap Nuts! I wasn’t inside my washing machine to see exactly how they worked – but I know they did! My clothes came out clean and smelling like “nothing” but clean. The thing that surprised me the most is the fact that my clothes came out feeling SOFT – no need to use a separate fabric softener.

How do you use Soap Nuts for laundry? Simple. I put 4-5 soap nuts in the muslin bag and tossed it into the washer. The soap nuts should last for at least 4-5 washes. My soap nuts seem to be lasting for longer than that!

Skip the rinse cycle! Yes, that is right. You can skip the rinse cycle when you wash with soap nuts – saving gallons of water and also washing machine energy. The saponin left on your clothes will just make them feel soft. (I actually only caught my machine once in time to stop it from rinsing – I am so used to just setting the washer and forgetting about it.)

What about dirty cloth diapers? Amazingly, the soap nuts cleaned even the nastiest of diapers my son could produce for testing purposes. They came out clean, soft and unscented. I have tested soap nuts on my cloth diapers for 2 weeks now, wondering if the diapers would develop a “stink issue” – but so far, I have been shocked that soap nuts is actually working on cloth diapers. Cloth diapers are by far the most challenging things I have ever had to wash, and normally require me to buy their own special detergent.

Bottom Line: BuySoapNuts.com gets a perfect 5 Star Rating for their soap nuts from Mom Always Finds Out!

Please visit BuySoapNuts.com to learn more. They are an excellent source of information about their products and their many uses. You can also shop their online store and purchase soap nuts to try for yourself. Satisfaction is 110% guaranteed.

These look FANTASTIC! Do you know if they are available in the UK? I’m a student and me and my housemates are always finding that the amount of washing powder we get through is ridiculous. These would really help up save on powder and water.

Hi, I checked the shipping policies for BuySoapNuts.com and currently they can only ship to the USA and Canada. Good luck in your quest to find soap nuts! I’m sure there has to be a source for the UK out there somewhere.

Hi There, thanks for stopping by jothome.blogspot.com

I have NEVER heard about soapnuts

I am skeptical, but very interested. Yes, I am a skeptic. When we get close to finishing up our detergent I will look into it. Thanks so much for sharing your eco-friendly find!

I totally understand being skeptical! I was too – especially about the cleaning of cloth diapers. My skepticism is what had me use the Soap Nuts for a full 2 weeks (and I do about 8 loads of laundry a week not counting diapers!) so I could really see if they worked. Time and time again, they worked! So I feel confident recommending them to everyone. And I didn’t even go into all the eco-friendliness of this product – once you are done with them, they can be composted! So from start to finish, soap nuts truly come from the Earth and back to it. Let me know what you think if you try them. I’d love to hear your experience!

They are so cool – I recently followed the directions on the bag for making liquid laundry detergent & it was so easy! I actually like using it in the liquid form better because of convenience. I plan to write a blog post about everything you can make with the Soap Nuts one of these days soon. (I also made the dishwasher liquid and glass cleaner with soap nuts recipes. Very easy and effective too.)
